Leadership
Hiroaki Harasaki, M.D., Ph.D. has been Senior President and President of New Tokyo Hospital group since 2008. The group has two hospitals with a total of 304 beds, three out-patient clinics, a division of preventive medicine and a division of home healthcare. The group includes over 233 physicians (including part-time) and 730 employees (including part-time). He also serves as Senior Advisor at SECOM Medical System which is affiliated with 17 hospital groups with 5,275 beds and 4,500 doctors and nurses. From 2002 to 2008, he was president, and Chairman of Board of Governors of another health system in the western part of Japan.

He was a full staff physician (full professor), member of the Cleveland Clinic (Board of Trustees) in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, and adjunct associate professor of both medical and engineering schools of the Case Western Reserve University. He served as a member in Surgery and Bioengineering Study section of the National Institute of Health (NIH), and chaired the steering committee of the NIH’s artificial heart program. He is the recipient of national and international awards for artificial heart development and innovation in surgical technology.

Established in 1968, New Tokyo Hospital is a young hospital compared to its peers. New Tokyo Hospital ranks among the most active medical institutions in the world in the area of invasive category. Although the hospital is not sizable, it is recognized widely for its high-level and compassionate patent care. We perform more than 6,200 cardiac catheterizations and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) exceeding 2,100 cases per annum. For many patients with severe heart disease, our cardiac surgery team serves as the last resort.

The next few years will be an era of transformation and expansion for New Tokyo Hospital. To ensure another 50 years of advancing medicine both locally and globally, and to accomplish our mission as a community hospital with a high level of care, a new, $158 million hospital building construction is scheduled to start in the spring of 2011 with completion in the end of 2012. This new hospital, located approximately 2km from the current hospital, will feature state-of-the-art patient care facilities and medical equipments. The new hospital will boast centers of clinical excellence in cardiology and cardiac surgery, digestive disease, orthopedics, neurosurgery and emergency medicine.
